“Suraphmas” visits Chaiyaphum province prior to the cabinet meeting in Korat, promoting the policy of “Drones for Agriculture” to reduce chemical exposure, decrease costs for farmers, save time and labor, and potentially utilizing a “Half-Pay Drone” model where the government pays half, piloting this in Chaiyaphum along with showcasing water management, fertilizer-biofertilizer practices, and precision agriculture to assist farmers.
On June 30th, Ms. Suraphmas Isarapukdee, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (HE), visited Chaiyaphum province before the cabinet meeting in the lower northeastern region, at Wat Bang Amphan in Bamnet Narong district. She was accompanied by顾问Petchdao Tohmeena, Secretary to the HE Minister, Ms. Suchada Thanathip, Permanent Secretary of HE, Dr. Supachai Pathumnakul, Deputy Permanent Secretary of HE, and other ministry executives. They were welcomed by Anant Naknom, Governor of Chaiyaphum, Samrith Tanathip, Member of Parliament for Chaiyaphum District 3, Surirat Nakasai, advisors, Nuttithin Chanvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, community leaders, farmer representatives, and locals in an enthusiastic atmosphere. All departments of the HE Ministry showcased their research and innovations, attracting significant public interest.
Ms. Suraphmas stated that Chaiyaphum, with its extensive agricultural land and numerous farmers, faces challenges such as water resource issues and chemical usage in farming. She has directed HE ministry officials to collaborate on solutions to enhance farmers’ quality of life. A priority policy involves providing smart tools, equipment, and agricultural drones under the government’s targeted technology and industry policies. The swift idea is the “Drones for Agriculture Poverty Alleviation” policy to minimize chemical exposure risks, cut costs for farmers, conserve time and labor, and boost incomes.
The HE Minister elaborated that the Drones for Agriculture policy may employ existing drones from ministry units or form a network of operators funded to address this policy. This could involve subsidizing drone services or expenses for individual farmers, akin to the government’s “Half-Pay Fertilizer” policy, sharing the goal of improving farmers’ livelihoods. Currently, the HE Ministry has innovations like high-precision agricultural chemical spraying drones produced by regional science parks, with funding support for entrepreneurs from the National Research Council of Thailand, among others. These are up to 10 times cheaper than market prices, directly reducing chemical exposure and working 40 times more efficiently than manual labor. She has tasked ministry executives to study regulations and methods to genuinely benefit farmers going forward.
After studying the assistance model, the “Drones for Agriculture” policy might initially be piloted in Chaiyaphum, implementing technology for public use in line with the ministry’s policy to resolve farmers’ issues using technological advancements. Additionally, during this farming season, apart from the drone initiative, the HE Ministry will also support water management, fertilizer-biofertilizer practices, precision agriculture, organic farming innovations, plant-animal disease detection kits, and more, to comprehensively assist farmers and enhance the agricultural sector’s capabilities.
Crucially, the HE Ministry also mobilized medical units, including Srinagarind Hospital from Khon Kaen University, to provide health checks to over 1,250 people, focusing on prevalent diseases in the Northeast such as liver fluke screening, colorectal cancer checks, kidney disease tests, and mobile dental units for teeth cleaning and scaling. The aim is to ensure locals have access to healthcare services and enjoy good health.
